It was a night that will not soon be forgotten as some of Houston’s finest came out to support Halo House Foundation’s “007” gala.
Held Nov. 11 at The Ballroom at Bayou Place, Anne and Dr. John Mendelsohn, former President of MD Anderson Cancer Center, were honored for their decades of community leadership in the fight against cancer. Michael Morgan, chairman of the Morgan Group, was presented with the 2017 HALO Award for his dedication to making the new building a reality.
The gala’s “007” James Bond theme tied in with Halo House’s 7th annual gala and came complete with an Aston Martin provided by Star Motors and Paige Parks “Bond” models. The gala chairs were longtime Halo House volunteers Shelia Tanner and Dena Wilson. Halo House board member John Dazey entertained the crowd as the evening’s emcee.
The gala featured both a live and silent auction, dinner, and dancing. An autographed framed photo of the Legendary Muhammad Ali was the highest selling silent auction item at $4,000 and a trip to the luxurious Dancing Bear Aspen resort was the highest selling live auction item at $11,000.
Partyers danced into the night. Halo House Executive Director Kathleen Fowler said, “The evening couldn’t have happened without the love and support of all of our wonderful volunteers.” The total amount raised for the evening, $475,000, will all go towards Halo House’s capital campaign to build its own 33 unit facility. Ground-breaking is scheduled for January 2018. Of a project cost of $12.1 million, the gala reduced the total amount still needed to just under $500,000. Halo House has a capital campaign challenge grant deadline of December 31st and is looking for “angels” to help them meet this deadline.
