When Daniel Cormier was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) in 2018, he and his wife, Judy, were devastated. In May, Daniel began a clinical trial at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, staying at various housing facilities around the Texas Medical Center.
After months of successful treatment, Daniel was in remission and the Cormiers returned to their home in Louisiana. The couple have been in business together for 20 years as transmission shop owners. Since Daniel was seemingly out of the woods, the two decided to retire to focus on Daniel’s health, but the next year would be a whirlwind of adverse events.
In August of 2020, Hurricane Laura destroyed the Cormier’s house forcing them to live in an RV for the next 7 months. With their home renovations and repairs nearly finished, the Cormiers received some shocking news: Daniel was diagnosed with MDS for a second time. Judy was heartbroken: they were only able to be in their home for seven days before having to leave again. Unexpectedly, both Daniel and Judy fell ill to Covid-19, disrupting any plans they created. Once they both recovered, they began their trip back to Texas. The Cormiers’ faith is a big part of their lives and what brought them peace and strength during this challenging time.
Once they were in Houston, Daniel entered a clinical trial and started prepping for a stem cell transplant. During this process, the Cormiers learned about Halo House and were able to move into an apartment in March of 2021. Success in the new clinical trial allowed Daniel and Judy to return to Louisiana for a couple months before Daniel’s transplant began. In July, The Cormiers returned to Halo House and Daniel started his stem cell transplant. Four months later, Judy and Daniel received great news: his impressive recovery and successful transplant meant he was finally in remission. They made it home just in time for the birth of their 9 th grandchild. “It is by the grace of God that we have, and will continue to, remain at peace during this journey,” Judy said.
Today, the Cormiers are residing in their Louisiana home at last. The couple believes Halo House was a crucial part of Daniel’s recovery, not just because it is affordable and convenient but because of who makes up Halo House. “We can go freely wherever we want to go, we have a place to walk outside and the hospital is close by. But the best thing about Halo House is the atmosphere and the people,” Judy said. “That is what’s priceless.”
